General Performing Arts Programme | Performing Arts Plus Programme 

Allegro's "General Performing Arts" Programme:

Dancers can progress through the levels of the General Performing Arts Program, without particular requirements such as ballet.  A multitude of classes and levels are offered to General Performing Arts students, and students will be placed in the correct class according to their age and level of experience.  Ballet is recommended, but not required to progress through this program.

Dancers in the General Performing Arts Programme participate in our year-end Recitals.

Classes and levels offered may vary from year to year depending on enrolment. *The guidelines below are provided to make your class selections easier. The Allegro teachers reserve the right to make ultimate class placement decisions.  

General Performing Arts Ballet:

Primary 1 (Kindergarten), Primary 2 (Gr. 1 at school), Primary 3 (Gr. 2 at school) – age determines placement

Pre-Teen (Grade 6 to 8 at school) - For 1st and 2nd year ballet students

Beginner Teen (Grade 9 to 12 at school) - For 1st and 2nd year ballet students

Intermediate Teen (Grade 9 to 12 at school) - Previous experience required. Teacher’s evaluation will determine placement

Advanced Teen (Grade 9 to 12 at school) - Previous experience required. Teacher’s evaluation will determine placement

Adult Ballet – Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced

Stretch & Strength

*It is normal for students in Pre-Teen and Teen ballet to spend more than 1 year in the same level to ensure that the basic skills of ballet are covered.

NO BALLET REQUIREMENT:

Pre-School: (Tap, Jazz & Creative Movement) – 3 years, 4 years, 5 years – age determines placement

Tap Jazz Combo: – Primary 1 (Kindergarten at school), Primary 2 (Gr. 1 at school), Primary 3 (Gr. 2 at school) – age determines placement

Jazz:

Jazz 1 (Grade 3 at school) – age determines placement

Jazz 2 (Grade 4 at school) - at least one year of previous dance experience is required

Jazz 3/4 (Grade 5 & 6 at school) – Previous experience required. Teacher’s evaluation will determine placement

Jazz 5/6 (Grade 7 & 8 at school) - Previous experience required. Teacher’s evaluation will determine placement

Jazz 7/8 (Grade 9 to 12 at school) - Previous experience required. Teacher’s evaluation will determine placement

Jazz 9 (Grade 9 to 12 at school) - Previous experience required. Teacher’s evaluation will determine placement

Jazz 10 (Grade 9 to 12 at school) - Previous experience required. Teacher’s evaluation will determine placement

Jazz Pre-Teen (Grade 6 to 8 at school) – For 1st and 2nd year students Jazz Teen (Grade 9 to 12 at school) – For 1st and 2nd year students

Advanced Jazz – For Advanced jazz dancers who have completed high school – Teacher’s recommendation Adult Jazz – Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced

Musical Theatre:

Elementary School Musical Theatre (Grade 3 to 5 at school)

Middle School Musical Theatre (Grade 6, 7 & 8 at school)

High School Musical Theatre (Grade 9 to 12 at school)

Hip-Hop:

Refer to Musical Theatre curriculum

*Adult classes in Hip-Hop are offered at the Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced level

*Allegro offers “all boys” hip-hop classes

Modern:

Middle School Modern (Grade 6, 7 & 8 at school)

High School Modern (Grade 9 to 12 at school)

Lyrical:

Middle School Lyrical (Grade 6, 7 & 8 at school)

High School Lyrical (Grade 9 to 12 at school)


 Allegro's "Performing Arts Plus" Programme:

Dancers enter P.A Plus upon recommendation from their teacher.  This program is designed for dancers wishing to cross-train in multiple disciplines at a competitive level of dance.  Ballet is required to progress through the core subjects of the Performing Arts Plus Program, and is recommended, but not required for "Performing Arts Plus" Hip-Hop and Musical Theatre.  Students will be placed in the correct level according to their age and level of experience.

Most Performing Arts Plus classes participate in up to 4 Dance Festivals per year, plus our annual Dance Extravaganza, and year-end Recitals.  Some classes attend Festival in Nanaimo.  Teachers reserve the right to make the decision as to which P.A Plus classes will participate in Festival.  A bill for Festival fees is issued in February. Festival fees are non-refundable and teachers reserve the right to cancel Festival entries if the dancers are unprepared - no refunds.

Festivals will likely take place during school hours.  Most school teachers are very supportive of our dancers around Festival time.

Recommended Core Subjects for "Performing Arts Plus" students:

*Note - Ballet is required to progress through the "CORE SUBJECTS" of the "Performing Arts Plus" Programme. All other classes listed in the core subjects are recommended, but optional.

Level Primary 3 - Ballet, Tap, Jazz - * note - Level Primary 3 is for students in Grade 2 at school - Teacher's discretion

Level 1 - Ballet, Tap, Jazz - *note - Level 1 is for students in Grade 3 at school - Teacher's discretion

Level 2 - Ballet, Tap, Jazz

Level 3 - Ballet (2x per week), Tap, Jazz, Jazz Tech

Level 4 - Ballet (2x per week), Tap, Jazz, Jazz Tech

Level 5 - Ballet (2x per week), Tap, Jazz, Jazz Tech, Pointe

Level 6 - Ballet (2x per week), Tap, Jazz, Jazz Tech, Pointe

Level 7 - Ballet (2x per week), Tap, Jazz, Jazz Tech, Pointe

Level 8 - Ballet (2x per week), Tap, Jazz, Jazz Tech, Pointe

Level 9 - Ballet (2x per week), Tap, Jazz, Jazz Tech, Pointe

Senior - Ballet (2x per week), Tap, Jazz, Jazz Tech, Pointe

Additional Class Options for "Performing Arts Plus" students:

Ballet is recommended but not required for "Performing Arts Plus" Hip-Hop & Musical Theatre. However, students participating in "P.A Plus" Hip-Hop & Musical Theatre must be recommended by an Allegro teacher. All other "P.A Plus" classes require Ballet (2x per week from Level 3 & up).

Level 1's - can add Junior Musical Theatre , Junior Hip-Hop

*Junior classes are for students in Grade 3 at school & up - Teacher's discretion

Level 2's - can add Junior Musical Theatre, Junior Hip-Hop

Level 3's - can add Junior Musical Theatre, Junior Hip-Hop

Level 4's - can add Intermediate Musical Theatre, Inter. Hip-Hop, Inter. Lyrical, Inter. Modern

*Intermediate classes are for students in Grade 6 at school & up - Teacher's discretion

Level 5's - can add Inter. Mus. Th, Inter. Hip-Hop, Inter. Lyrical, Inter. Modern, Stretch & Strength

Level 6's - can add Inter. Mus. Th, Inter. Hip-Hop, Inter. Lyrical, Inter. Modern, Stretch & Strength

Level 7's - can add Inter Mus. Th, Inter. Hip-Hop, Inter. Lyrical, Inter. Modern, Stretch & Strength
